In this comprehensive guide, we’ll provide you with a step-by-step recipe for making this beloved Cinnamon Swirl Bread, and we’ll explore the history of cinnamon as a cherished spice and its role in culinary traditions.

Cinnamon is one of the oldest and most cherished spices in the world. Its history dates back thousands of years, with its origins in Sri Lanka, India, and other parts of Southeast Asia. Ancient Egyptians used cinnamon in their embalming process, and it was highly valued in ancient Rome and medieval Europe.

During the Middle Ages, cinnamon was a luxury spice in Europe, sought after for its rich flavor and aromatic qualities. It was a symbol of prestige and wealth, often used in royal feasts and to mask the flavor of spoiled meat before the advent of refrigeration.

Cinnamon’s popularity grew during the Age of Exploration when European explorers established trade routes to Asia. They sought to control the spice trade, which was dominated by Arab and Venetian merchants. Cinnamon, along with other spices, became a highly sought-after commodity and played a significant role in the Age of Exploration and colonization.

By the 17th century, the Dutch East India Company had a monopoly on the cinnamon trade, leading to the establishment of cinnamon plantations in Sri Lanka. This made cinnamon more accessible to a wider audience.

In baking, cinnamon has been a cherished spice for centuries, enhancing the flavor of various dishes, from pastries to cakes and bread. Cinnamon Swirl Bread, with its sweet, aromatic filling, became a beloved treat in households around the world, offering a comforting and flavorful experience.

Today, cinnamon remains a staple in kitchens worldwide, and Cinnamon Swirl Bread continues to be a favorite indulgence enjoyed by people of all ages. Its rich history and enduring popularity make it a cherished part of culinary traditions.

INGREDIENTS

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

For the Cinnamon Filling:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and a pinch of sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the mixture, stir gently, and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, sugar, salt, and activated yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
  7. While the dough is rising, prepare the cinnamon filling. In a bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon.
  8. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down to release excess air and roll it out into a rectangle, about 16×12 inches.
  9. Spread the softened butter evenly over the entire surface of the dough.
  10. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the butter.
  11. Starting from one of the longer sides, tightly roll up the dough, forming a log.
  12. Place the rolled dough seam side down and gently tuck the ends under to ensure it fits into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  13. Cover the loaf pan with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  14. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  15. Bake the Cinnamon Swirl Bread in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  1. Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
  2. Transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely.
  3. Slice and enjoy your delicious homemade Cinnamon Swirl Bread, savoring the sweet and aromatic layers of cinnamon and sugar.
