Nut-free
These nuggets are cruelty-free and baked, not fried. Growing up, before we were vegan, nuggets (with a side of ranch dressing, of course) were our go-to order at restaurants. So, naturally, we wanted to create a simple plant-based alternative. They are perfectly seasoned and surprisingly easy to whip up. They pair deliciously with vegan Ranch Dressing, ketchup or vegan BBQ sauce.
Baked tofu nuggets are known for their delightful crunch and rich flavor. They offer a satisfying texture that mimics the traditional fried version but without the excess oil and calories. Coated in a seasoned flour mixture, these nuggets achieve a perfect balance of savory and slightly nutty flavors.
Tofu, the star ingredient in these nuggets, is a versatile and protein-rich food derived from soybeans. It’s favored by vegans and vegetarians as a source of essential amino acids. Baking the tofu rather than frying it makes these nuggets a healthier choice, as they contain significantly less fat and are better for heart health.
What makes baked tofu nuggets even more appealing is their adaptability to various seasonings and flavors. You can customize the flour coating with different spices and herbs to suit your taste preferences. Whether you prefer a spicy kick, smoky notes, or a classic blend of garlic and onion, these nuggets can be tailored to your liking.
Baked tofu nuggets are a hit with both kids and adults. They can be served as a wholesome snack, an appetizer for gatherings, or as a protein-packed topping for salads, bowls, or sandwiches. Their versatility allows you to get creative with dipping sauces or serve them alongside your favorite sides.
Compared to their deep-fried counterparts, baked tofu nuggets offer a lower-fat alternative that doesn’t compromise on taste. They are also a good source of essential nutrients like iron, calcium, and magnesium, making them a nutritious addition to your plant-based diet.
In conclusion, baked tofu nuggets are a delicious and nutritious way to enjoy the flavors and textures of traditional nuggets while maintaining a healthy, plant-based lifestyle. They’re easy to make, highly customizable, and perfect for anyone seeking a tasty and satisfying meatless option.
PREP TIME: 20 minutes, plus inactive time to press tofu
COOK TIME: 40 minutes
YIELD: 24 nuggets
INGREDIENTS:
For the Tofu
- 1 (14- to 16-oz [396- to 453-g]) block firm or extra-firm tofu
- 4 tbsp (60 ml) canola oil, divided
- Cooking oil spray, as needed
For the Flour Coating
- ¼ cup (31 g) all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup (20 g) nutritional yeast
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ⅛ tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- ⅛ tsp freshly ground black pepper
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Prepare the tofu: Slice the tofu into four long, equal pieces. Press the slices to remove excess moisture.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Oil a large baking sheet with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of the canola oil, brushing to cover the surface.
- Break each piece of tofu into six bite-sized chunks, creating 24 pieces in total. Place the tofu in a medium-sized bowl and drizzle with the remaining 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of canola oil. Gently toss the tofu to evenly coat each piece with oil.
- Coat and bake the tofu: In a small bowl, stir together all the ingredients for the flour coating. Add the flour coating to the bowl of tofu and toss the tofu pieces to liberally coat them with the flour mixture.
- Place each piece of coated tofu on the prepared baking sheet. Spray them liberally with cooking oil to help them become crispy.
- Bake for 40 minutes, flipping the tofu pieces and spraying both sides with oil halfway through the baking time.
- Remove from the oven and serve the crispy baked tofu while it’s still warm.
