Sweet and summery, this easy ice cream is a wonderful treat when made with berries fresh from the garden, although grocer’s berries are still delicious! Frozen berries are not an option—fresh is the only way to go.

YIELD: 1 QUART

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • Pinch salt
  • ¼ cup strawberry jam/preserves
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 cup puréed fresh strawberries
  • 1 cup chopped/crushed fresh strawberries

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer.
  2. Once combined, allow to chill in refrigerator for 3–4 hours or overnight.
  3. Once chilled, add to ice cream maker and follow manufacturer’s instructions for freezing.

BUT IT’S NOT PINK!

  • Fresh, homemade strawberry ice cream, unlike store-bought ice cream, is not pink. The chunks of berries add a nice bit of color on their own, but if you are itching for that familiar pink hue, simply add a couple drops of red food coloring to the mix.
