Gluten-free option, Nut-free, Soy-free option

If you don’t know what BLTA stands for—it’s bacon (vegan for us, of course!), lettuce, tomato and avocado. The addition of avocado takes the classic BLT up a notch. We recommend using our homemade Tofu “Bacon” for this recipe, but store-bought is also delicious in a pinch.

A BLTA, short for Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, and Avocado sandwich, is a delightful twist on the classic BLT sandwich. In this upgraded version, the “A” stands for avocado, which adds a creamy and rich element to the traditional combination of crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, and juicy tomatoes.

To make a BLTA, you typically start with slices of thick-cut vegan bread, which can be toasted for an extra layer of flavor and texture. Next, you layer on the Tofu “Bacon,” a plant-based alternative that replicates the smoky and savory flavors of traditional bacon but without any animal products. The bacon is followed by slices of ripe beefsteak tomato, which provide a juicy and slightly acidic contrast.

What sets the BLTA apart is the addition of ripe avocados, which are smashed or sliced to create a creamy and indulgent layer. The avocado adds a luxurious mouthfeel and a subtle nutty flavor that pairs perfectly with the other ingredients.

To complete the BLTA, you add fresh and crisp iceberg lettuce leaves for a refreshing crunch. Finally, a spread of vegan mayo, tailored to be soy-free if needed, ties all the components together, providing a creamy and slightly tangy finish.

The BLTA is a fantastic choice for those looking to enjoy a satisfying and flavorful plant-based sandwich packed with contrasting textures and flavors. Whether you’re a seasoned vegan or simply looking to explore plant-based alternatives, the BLTA is sure to become a beloved addition to your sandwich repertoire.

PREP TIME: 10 minutes

COOK TIME: none

YIELD: 4 sandwiches

INGREDIENTS:

  • 8 slices thick-cut vegan bread (gluten-free if needed)
  • 24 slices Tofu “Bacon” (gluten-free and/or soy-free if needed)
  • 1 medium-sized beefsteak tomato, sliced into 8 slices
  • 2 medium-sized ripe avocados, peeled, pitted, and smashed
  • 16 pieces iceberg lettuce
  • Vegan Mayo (soy-free if needed)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. If desired, toast each slice of bread until golden brown.
  2. Assemble each sandwich as follows: Place 6 slices of Tofu “Bacon” on one slice of bread. Add 2 slices of tomato, a generous portion of smashed avocado, and 4 pieces of iceberg lettuce.
  3. Spread vegan mayo on another slice of bread and place it on top to complete the sandwich.
  4. Slice the sandwich in half and serve immediately.

TIPS:

  1. Choose Ripe Ingredients: Opt for ripe avocados and juicy beefsteak tomatoes. Ripe avocados are easier to smash or slice, and they provide a creamy texture. Juicy tomatoes add vibrant flavor to your sandwich.
  2. Vegan Bacon Alternatives: If you’re using vegan bacon alternatives, make sure to cook them to your desired level of crispiness. Some varieties are best when they have a bit of crunch.
  3. Toasting the Bread: Toasting your bread can add extra flavor and help prevent sogginess. You can do this in a toaster or on a hot skillet with a little vegan butter or oil.
  4. Smashing Avocado: If you’re smashing the avocado, use a fork to mash it gently in a bowl. You can season it with a pinch of salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lime or lemon juice for extra flavor.
  5. Layering: When assembling your BLTA, consider layering for even distribution of flavors. For example, you can place the lettuce next to the bread to keep it from wilting from the tomato or avocado’s moisture.
  6. Vegan Mayo: If you’re looking for a soy-free vegan mayo, there are many options available in stores or you can make your own using ingredients like aquafaba (chickpea brine) or cashews.
  7. Customization: Don’t be afraid to customize your BLTA to your preferences. You can add vegan cheese, pickles, or even a spicy sriracha aioli for an extra kick.
  8. Serving: Serve your BLTA immediately after assembling to enjoy the contrast of textures and flavors at their best. If you need to pack it for lunch or a picnic, consider wrapping it tightly in parchment paper or foil to prevent sogginess.
  9. Pairing: BLTA sandwiches go wonderfully with a side of sweet potato fries, a fresh green salad, or some chips for a complete meal.
  10. Experiment: Feel free to experiment with different bread types, vegan bacon brands, or additional toppings to make your BLTA uniquely delicious.
