Simple Miso Soup with Wakame

Simple Miso Soup is a delightful and nourishing Japanese dish that harmoniously combines the flavors of sweet, savory, and sour. This comforting soup comes together effortlessly, making it an ideal choice for a quick and satisfying meal. In fact, many Japanese people start their mornings with a bowl of miso soup, accompanied by rice and pickled vegetables, setting a nutritious and balanced tone for the day ahead.

One of the key ingredients in miso soup is miso paste, which is traditionally fermented and known for its richness in vitamin K and folate. To preserve the nutritional benefits of miso, it is important to whisk the paste into the warm broth just before serving, avoiding boiling it as high heat can potentially damage its heat-sensitive nutrients.

The foundation of this soup is the dashi, a flavorful Japanese stock made from ingredients like kombu (dried kelp) and bonito flakes (dried fish flakes). By gently warming the dashi, the soup develops a comforting and aromatic base. Instant wakame flakes, a type of seaweed, are added to the broth, rehydrating and infusing it with a delicate oceanic flavor.

To complete the soup, the white miso paste is whisked into the warm broth, dissolving and imparting its distinctive umami taste. Finally, the soup is garnished with chopped green onions, adding a fresh and vibrant element to each spoonful.

The result is a bowl of Simple Miso Soup that captivates the taste buds with its well-balanced flavors and comforting warmth. It can be enjoyed as a light meal on its own or served as a starter before a Japanese-inspired feast. Embrace the simplicity and nourishment of miso soup, and savor its harmonious blend of flavors.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 cups Dashi
  • 2 tablespoons instant wakame flakes
  • 2 tablespoons white miso paste
  • 4 green onions

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Warm the dashi in a saucepan over medium-high heat until bubbles begin to form at the edges of the pan.
  2. Stir the wakame flakes into the broth, allowing them to rehydrate fully, about 2 minutes.
  3. Turn off the heat, whisk in the miso paste until it dissolves fully, and then stir in the green onions.
  4. Ladle the soup into soup bowls and serve warm.

VARIATIONS:

  • VEGETABLE MISO SOUP: Add a variety of chopped vegetables to the soup to enhance its nutritional profile and add texture. Consider options like sliced mushrooms, tofu cubes, thinly sliced carrots, baby spinach, or snap peas. Simmer the vegetables in the broth until they are tender before whisking in the miso paste.

  • SEAFOOD MISO SOUP: Boost the seafood flavors by adding cooked shrimp, sliced fish fillets, or clams to the soup. You can add the seafood along with the wakame flakes, allowing it to cook through in the hot broth. This variation provides a delightful umami taste and a heartier option.

  • SPICY MISO SOUP: If you enjoy a kick of heat, incorporate some spice into your miso soup. Add a small amount of chili paste or chili flakes to the broth while it simmers. Adjust the amount to your preferred spice level. Garnish with sliced chili peppers or sprinkle additional chili flakes on top for an extra fiery touch.
