Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy is a classic comfort food dish that combines moist meat patties with a flavorful onion gravy. This recipe, shared by Kim Kidd from New Freedom, Pennsylvania, takes advantage of the rich flavors of condensed French onion soup to create a delicious and satisfying meal. With a preparation time of just 10 minutes and a total cooking time of 25 minutes, it’s a quick and convenient option for a weeknight dinner. The meat patties are seasoned with bread crumbs, salt, and pepper, then cooked until browned and juicy. The onion gravy is made from a combination of the soup, water, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and a smooth flour-water mixture for thickening. Serve the Salisbury steaks and gravy over hot cooked egg noodles for a complete and satisfying meal.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 can (10½ ounces) condensed French onion soup, undiluted, divided
  • ½ cup dry bread crumbs
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Dash of pepper
  • 1½ pounds ground beef
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon prepared mustard
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 6 cups hot cooked egg noodles
  • Chopped fresh parsley (optional)

PREPARATION:

  1. In a large bowl, beat the egg. Stir in ⅓ cup of the French onion soup, bread crumbs, salt, and pepper. Crumble the ground beef over the mixture and mix well. Shape into six oval patties.
  2. In a large skillet, brown the patties over medium heat for 3-4 minutes on each side or until a thermometer inserted into the center reads 160°F and the juices run clear. Remove the patties and set them aside; drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  3. Add the water, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and the remaining French onion soup to the skillet. Bring to a boil.
  4. Return the patties to the skillet. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes or until heated through.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the flour and cold water until smooth. Stir the mixture into the skillet. Bring to a boil and cook and stir for 2 minutes or until the gravy has thickened.
  6. Serve the Salisbury steaks and gravy over hot cooked egg noodles. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.

YIELD: Makes 6 servings

PREP/COOK TIME: 35 minutes

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Make sure the ground beef is cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F to ensure it is fully cooked and safe to eat.
  • Adjust the seasoning of the gravy to taste by adding more salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, or mustard if desired.
  • Serve the Salisbury steaks and gravy over mashed potatoes or rice instead of egg noodles for a different variation.
  • Customize the recipe by adding sautéed onions or mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor and texture.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated for another meal.

TIPS:

  • Use lean ground beef for the Salisbury steaks to minimize excess fat in the dish.
  • For added flavor, you can brown the meat patties in a combination of butter and oil instead of just oil.
  • Double the recipe and freeze the cooked Salisbury steaks for future quick and easy meals.
  • Serve the dish with a side of steamed vegetables or a green salad to balance the meal.
