Almost any fruit makes a good base for a juicy crumble. Our filling variations (below) give
you plenty of options so you can enjoy this dessert year-round.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup large-flake rolled oats
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • pinch salt
  • ⅓ cup butter, softened
  • Fruit filling (variations below)

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, whisk together oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Using a fork, mash in butter until crumbly.
  3. Spread fruit filling evenly in a greased 8-inch (2 L) square baking dish.
  4. Sprinkle oat mixture over filling.
  5. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven until bubbly, fruit is tender, and topping is crisp and golden, 40 to 60 minutes.

Variations for Fruit Filling:

  • Apple Cinnamon Filling: Toss together 8 cups sliced peeled apples, ¼ cup granulated sugar, 2 tbsp all-purpose flour, and ½ tsp cinnamon.
  • Apple Quince Filling: Toss together 5 cups sliced peeled apples, 3 cups thinly sliced peeled quinces, ¼ cup granulated sugar, 1 tbsp all-purpose flour, and 1 tbsp lemon juice.
  • Bumbleberry Filling: Toss together 3 cups diced peeled apples, 2 cups quartered hulled strawberries, 1 cup each raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries, ¼ cup granulated sugar, and 3 tbsp all-purpose flour.
  • Pear Cranberry Filling: Toss together 6 cups diced peeled pears, 2 cups fresh or thawed frozen cranberries, ¼ cup granulated sugar, and 3 tbsp all-purpose flour.
  • Apple Plum Filling: Toss together 4 cups sliced plums, 2 cups sliced peeled apples, ⅓ cup packed brown sugar, 2 tbsp all-purpose flour, and ¼ tsp each nutmeg and cinnamon.
  • Blueberry Peach Filling: Toss together 6 cups sliced peeled peaches, 2 cups blueberries, ¼ cup granulated sugar, 3 tbsp all-purpose flour, and 1 tbsp lemon juice.
  • Mincemeat Pear Filling: Stir together 1 jar (700 mL) all-fruit mincemeat, 2 firm ripe pears (peeled and grated), 1 cup chopped dried figs or whole golden raisins, and 1 tsp grated orange zest.
  • Strawberry Rhubarb Filling: Toss together 6 cups sliced fresh rhubarb (or thawed frozen sliced rhubarb), 2 cups sliced strawberries, ½ cup granulated sugar, 3 tbsp all-purpose flour, and ½ tsp finely grated orange zest.
