  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, for searing

 

For the Sauce:

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

 

For the Vegetables (Optional):

  • 2 carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and diced

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
  2. Season and Sear the Beefsteak:
    • Season the individual beefsteaks with salt and black pepper on both sides.
    • In an ovenproof skillet or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
    • Sear the beefsteaks for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they develop a golden brown crust. Transfer the seared beefsteaks to a plate and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In the same skillet or Dutch oven, add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until they become fragrant and translucent.
  4. Add Remaining Sauce Ingredients:
    • Add the diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, beef broth, red wine (if using), dried thyme, dried rosemary, and paprika to the skillet. Stir to combine.
    • Season the sauce with salt and black pepper to taste.
  5. Simmer the Sauce:
    • Let the sauce simmer for about 5-7 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly.
  6. Return Beefsteak to the Skillet:
    • Return the seared beefsteaks to the skillet, placing them in the sauce.
  7. Add Vegetables (Optional):
    • If using vegetables, add the sliced carrots and diced potatoes to the skillet, arranging them around the beefsteaks.
  8. Cover and Bake:
    • Cover the skillet or Dutch oven with a lid or aluminum foil.
  9. Bake:
    • Transfer the covered skillet or Dutch oven to the preheated oven and bake at 325°F (163°C) for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beefsteaks are tender and the vegetables are cooked through.
  10. Serve:
