The story of Oreo cookies dates back to the late 19th century when two entrepreneurs, Jacob Loose and his cousin, Christian Kent, started the business that would eventually become the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco). In 1912, Nabisco introduced the Oreo Biscuit (as it was originally called) to the world. These cookies featured a chocolate wafer with a creamy vanilla filling, closely resembling the modern-day Oreo.

Over the years, the Oreo cookie has gone through several transformations and variations, becoming one of the most beloved and recognizable cookies in the world. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the timeless combination of chocolate and cream that appeals to people of all ages. Now, let’s celebrate this iconic cookie by incorporating it into delicious cupcakes.

INGREDIENTS

For the Cupcakes:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 12 Oreo cookies, crushed (for batter)

For the Cookies & Cream Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • 10 Oreo cookies, crushed (for frosting)
  • Additional Oreo cookies (for garnish)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, which takes about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs, one at a time, to the butter-sugar mixture, making sure each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next one. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Start and end with the dry mixture, mixing until just combined after each addition.
  6. Gently fold in the crushed Oreo cookies into the cupcake batter.
  7. Spoon the cupcake batter into the prepared muffin tin, filling each cup about two-thirds full.
  8. Bake the cupcakes in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  9. While the cupcakes are baking, prepare the Cookies & Cream frosting. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.
  10. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and continue to beat.
  11. Slowly pour in the milk and beat until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  12. Gently fold in the crushed Oreo cookies into the frosting until they are evenly distributed.
  13. Once the cupcakes have cooled completely, pipe or spread the Cookies & Cream frosting on top of each cupcake.
  14. Garnish each cupcake with a whole Oreo cookie, gently pressing it into the frosting.
