INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (yours or store-bought)
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten in a small bowl
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • ½ tablespoon garlic powder

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375–400°F (190–200°C).
  2. Roll the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured work surface, roll the puff pastry into a rectangle approximately 12×14 inches and ⅛ inch thick. If using store-bought pastry, adjust thickness as needed.
  3. Apply Egg Wash and Poppy Seeds: Brush the top of the puff pastry with the beaten egg, then sprinkle evenly with poppy seeds.
  4. Flip the Puff Pastry: Carefully lift and flip the puff pastry over, placing the poppy-seed side down. You may want to work on parchment paper to avoid sticking.
  5. Season the Second Side: Brush the second side of the puff pastry with the egg wash, then sprinkle it with paprika and garlic powder to your desired taste.
  6. Cut and Twist: Using a pizza cutter, cut thin strips of puff pastry, about ½ inch thick. Carefully lift each strip and twist it a few times. Place the twisted strips on a parchment-paper-lined baking sheet, pressing the ends firmly against the paper to secure them.
  7. Chill (Optional): If the puff pastry becomes too warm during the process, transfer the baking sheet to the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes to chill.
  8. Bake: Place the prepared puff pastry sticks in the preheated oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until they are puffed and golden brown.
  9. Serve: Once baked, the Sacristains should easily come off the baking sheet. You can use a spatula to lift the ends gently if needed. Serve these delightful sticks in a creative manner to impress your guests.
