Walnut Mincemeat Pie is a classic and timeless dessert that has graced the tables of holiday feasts and special occasions for generations. Despite its name, mincemeat pie contains no actual meat today; it’s a sweet and spiced pie filled with a mixture of chopped nuts, dried fruits, spices, and sometimes a splash of brandy or rum. This delicious pie is synonymous with holiday traditions, and its history is steeped in centuries of culinary evolution. Join us on a culinary journey as we explore the intriguing history and prepare a delightful Walnut Mincemeat Pie.

The history of mincemeat pie dates back to medieval Europe, where it was originally a savory dish containing finely minced meat, such as beef or lamb, combined with fruits, spices, and other ingredients. These early versions of mincemeat pies were often enjoyed as part of elaborate feasts and celebrations.

Over time, the combination of sweet and savory ingredients began to shift more towards the sweet side. By the 18th century, the use of meat in mincemeat pie became less common, especially in England. Instead, suet (a type of beef fat) was often used to maintain the richness and texture.

In the United States, mincemeat pie gained popularity during the colonial period and became a beloved dessert during Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. American recipes often omitted the meat entirely and focused on ingredients like apples, dried fruits, spices, and alcohol to create a sweet and flavorful filling.

Walnut Mincemeat Pie, as a variation of the traditional mincemeat pie, brings an extra layer of texture and flavor to the dessert. Chopped walnuts add a rich, nutty taste that pairs beautifully with the sweet, spiced filling.

Today, mincemeat pies are enjoyed throughout the holiday season, often with a dash of nostalgia for times gone by. They have become a symbol of tradition and the enduring appeal of classic recipes.

INGREDIENTS

For the Pie Crust:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 2-4 tablespoons ice water

For the Walnut Mincemeat Filling:

  • 2 cups prepared mincemeat (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup dark rum or brandy (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

INSTRUCTIONS

For the Pie Crust:

  1. In a food processor, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Pulse to mix.
  2. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients in the food processor. Pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, pulsing until the dough starts to come together.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together. Shape it into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

For the Walnut Mincemeat Filling:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the prepared mincemeat, chopped walnuts, brown sugar, dark rum or brandy (if using), vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt. Stir until all ingredients are well mixed.

Assembling and Baking:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Roll out the chilled pie crust on a floured surface into a 12-inch circle. Carefully transfer it to a 9-inch pie dish and trim any excess dough.
  3. Pour the walnut mincemeat filling into the prepared pie crust.
  4. If desired, you can add a lattice or decorative top crust, or simply leave it open.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the pie is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  6. If the crust edges start to brown too quickly, you can cover them with aluminum foil or a pie crust shield to prevent over-browning.
  7. Once done, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
  8. Serve your Walnut Mincemeat Pie warm or at room temperature, with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
