  • ½ cup minced fresh cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt and pepper

TIPS:

  • Choosing Red Lentils: The recipe specifically calls for red lentils, as they have a unique texture that’s essential to achieving the desired consistency. Avoid substituting with other lentil types, as they won’t yield the same results.
  • Blooming the Spices: Heating the spices in oil until they become fragrant enhances their flavors. Be careful not to burn them; it only takes about 10 seconds for the spices to bloom.
  • Consistency: The goal is to achieve a smooth but not overly thin dal. Follow the water-to-lentil ratio closely to attain the perfect porridge-like texture.
  • Fresh Cilantro: Adding minced fresh cilantro not only adds color but also brings a burst of freshness to the dish. If you’re not a fan of cilantro, you can substitute with fresh parsley.
  • Butter for Richness: The addition of unsalted butter at the end of cooking adds a luxurious touch to the dal. For a vegan version, you can substitute with vegan butter or coconut oil.
  • Serving: Serve this Spiced Red Lentils over steamed rice for a complete and satisfying meal. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice over the dal before enjoying, as the acidity enhances the flavors.
