Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 25 minutes

Servings: 2

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 lb extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 1 tbsp tamari
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Sauce:

  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Begin by dicing the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes and placing them in a Ziploc bag.
  2. Add tamari and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to the tofu in the bag.
  3. Seal the bag and shake it vigorously to ensure the tofu cubes are evenly coated.
  4. Spread the coated tofu cubes in the air fryer basket, then give them a light spray of cooking oil.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  6. Air fry the tofu cubes in two separate batches for 15 minutes each, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Make sure to shake the basket a couple of times during cooking for even browning.
  7. While the tofu is air frying, prepare the sauce. In a saucepan, combine orange zest, orange juice, water, cornstarch, crushed red pepper flakes, minced ginger, minced garlic, and maple syrup.
  8. Stir and cook the sauce mixture over medium heat until it thickens to a glossy consistency.
  9. Once the tofu cubes are crispy and golden, remove them from the air fryer.
  10. Toss the air-fried tofu cubes in the prepared orange sauce, ensuring they are well-coated.
  11. Serve the Tofu Orange immediately, garnished with some fresh herbs if desired.

TIPS:

  • Make sure to press the tofu well before using it. This step helps remove excess moisture and allows the tofu to absorb the flavors better.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of crushed red pepper flakes according to your spice preference.
  • When cooking in the air fryer, be sure not to overcrowd the basket. Cooking the tofu in two batches ensures optimal crispiness.
  • For a glossy finish on the tofu cubes, consider giving them a light spray of cooking oil before air frying.
  • Serve the Tofu Orange over steamed rice or with a side of sautéed vegetables for a complete and well-balanced meal.
