  • 4 large onions, chopped (6 cups)
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes in puree
  • 1 can (16 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (12 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 2¼ teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce
  • 1½ teaspoons pepper
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 12 hoagie buns or other sandwich rolls, split

 

PREPARATIONS:

  1. In a Dutch oven, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes or until no longer pink, breaking it into crumbles. Drain the excess fat.
  2. Stir in all the remaining ingredients, except the buns. Bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour or until the desired consistency is reached and the flavors are well blended. Stir occasionally.
  3. Serve the dynamite filling on split hoagie buns or other sandwich rolls.
