Serves 32

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 (15-ounce) can no-salt-added tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Pinch of ground allspice
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Pinch of freshly ground pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon sweet paprika

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a 2-quart slow cooker, combine all the ingredients listed except for the sweet paprika. This includes the no-salt-added tomato sauce, water, onion powder, sugar, cider vinegar, sea salt, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground allspice, nutmeg, freshly ground pepper, and the optional spicy ingredients if you desire a kick. Stir everything together until well combined.
  2. Slow Cook: Cover the slow cooker and cook for 2 to 4 hours, or until your homemade ketchup reaches your desired consistency. Stir occasionally during the cooking process to ensure all the flavors meld together beautifully.
  3. Add Paprika: Once the cooking time is complete, turn off the slow cooker or remove the crock from it. Stir in the sweet paprika, which adds a hint of smokiness and depth to your ketchup.
  4. Cool and Store: Allow the ketchup mixture to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer it into a covered container, such as a recycled ketchup bottle. Store your homemade ketchup in the refrigerator until it’s ready to be enjoyed.

NOTE:

  • Ketchup with a Kick: For a zesty twist on your homemade ketchup, consider adding crushed red peppers, cayenne pepper, or salt-free chili powder in addition to, or instead of, the cinnamon and other seasonings. You can also opt for hot paprika instead of sweet paprika for an extra kick.

Now that you’ve crafted your own homemade ketchup with a kick, you can savor its rich and complex flavors in various dishes. Whether you’re using it as a dipping sauce, a condiment for burgers and hot dogs, or an ingredient in your favorite recipes, this ketchup is sure to elevate your culinary creations. Enjoy the delicious taste of homemade goodness with every squeeze.
