SERVES: 4–6

INGREDIENTS:

BREAD PUDDING

  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 cups cubed French bread

WHITE SAUCE

  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • Dash of salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk and butter. Heat until the butter is melted, then remove from heat and set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs. Add the brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon to the eggs and mix well. Allow the milk to cool for 30 minutes before adding it to the egg mixture to prevent curdling.
  4. Add the cubed French bread to the egg and milk mixture. Gently stir to combine, being careful not to overmix.
  5. Pour the bread pudding mixture into a well-oiled 8″ × 11″ baking pan. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Once baked, set the bread pudding aside.
  6. For the white sauce, mix all the sauce ingredients together in a pan. Bring the mixture to a boil and cook for 3–4 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Pour about half of the white sauce over the warm bread pudding. Reserve the remaining sauce in a serving bowl to allow guests to add more to their individual servings if desired. Serve the bread pudding warm and enjoy!

SERVING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Warm and Naked: Serve the bread pudding warm and as it is, without any additional toppings. The rich flavors and creamy texture are delightful on their own, making it a comforting treat for those who enjoy the simplicity of this classic dessert.
  • Drizzled with White Sauce: Pour a generous amount of the delicious white sauce over the warm bread pudding. The sweet and creamy sauce enhances the flavors of the pudding and adds an extra layer of indulgence.
  • Accompanied by Whipped Cream: Top the bread pudding with a dollop of freshly whipped cream. The light and airy texture of the whipped cream contrasts beautifully with the rich and moist pudding.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream: Serve the bread pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. The combination of warm, creamy bread pudding with cold, velvety ice cream creates a delightful contrast in temperature and texture.
  • Fresh Fruit Garnish: Add a touch of freshness to the dessert by garnishing it with slices of fresh fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries. The natural sweetness of the fruit complements the flavors of the bread pudding.
  • Nuts and Caramel: Sprinkle some chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, over the bread pudding for added crunch and nutty flavor. Drizzle a little caramel sauce on top to create a delicious caramel-nut twist.
