Prep Time: 25 mins

Total Time: 6 hrs 45 mins

Servings per Recipe: 6

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 loaf hearty country bread, unsliced
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 (3 lb) boneless beef round steak, 2 inches thick
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (or to taste)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Ground black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic salt, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. PREPARE THE BREAD LOAF: Slice off a piece of bread from the loaf and set it aside for later use. Carefully remove the inside center of the bread loaf, creating a hollow space to be filled later.
  2. COOK THE BEEF STEAK: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Fry the boneless beef round steak for approximately 6 minutes per side, or until it’s cooked to your preferred level of doneness. Once cooked, set the steak aside.
  3. SAUTÉ ONIONS, MUSHROOMS, AND GARLIC: In the same pan, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Stir-fry the thinly sliced onions, mushrooms, and minced garlic for about 7 minutes, or until the onions become translucent.
  4. FILL THE HOLLOWED BREAD: Fill the hollowed-out bread loaf with the cooked mushrooms, onions, and beef steak.
  5. COVER WITH RESERVED BREAD SLICE: Place the piece of bread that was sliced off earlier back on top of the loaf to cover the filling.
  6. WRAP AND PRESS DOWN: Wrap the entire bread loaf, now filled with delicious ingredients, in foil. Place something heavy on top of it, such as a cast-iron frying pan with jars of water in it, to press the sandwich.
  7. REFRIGERATE OVERNIGHT: Let the sandwich rest in the refrigerator for approximately 7 hours or overnight, allowing the flavors to meld.
  8. SERVING: When you’re ready to serve, cut the stuffed bread into individual servings.
  9. ENJOY: Your Overnight Stuffed Beef and Mushroom Sandwich is now ready to delight your senses with its rich and savory flavors.

TIPS:

  • Slicing Technique: For a more appealing presentation, consider slicing the sandwich into smaller servings before refrigerating.
  • Filling Variations: Get creative with your fillings by adding cheese, roasted red peppers, or other ingredients that appeal to your taste.
  • Marinating the Beef: For an extra burst of flavor, marinate the beef steak before frying it.
  • Toasting the Bread: You can toast the reserved slice of bread before placing it back on the sandwich for added texture.
