CINNAMON HOT APPLE PIE SUNDAE SAUCE

There is nothing better than an apple pie, but if you aren’t in the mood to bake, and pie crust is your nemesis, this simple sauce can solve all your problems. Sweet, tart, buttery, and laden with brown sugar, it has all the great flavors of an apple pie. It’s delicious over vanilla ice cream or cake, served with a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream.

MAKES: ABOUT 4 Cups

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • ½ cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • ¾ cup apple cider
  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and quartered

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Melt the butter in the pressure cooker over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and stir to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Add the cider and apples, and spoon the sauce over the apples.
  4. Lock the lid in place and cook at high pressure for 3 minutes.
  5. Quick release the pressure and remove the lid, tilting the pot away from you to avoid the escaping steam.
  6. Serve the sauce warm.
  7. To store, cool the sauce completely and store in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

NOTE:

  • The frozen sauce can be microwaved back to bubbling in no time.
