Churumuri, a delightful puffed rice treat, hails from the vibrant streets of Karnataka, a southern state in India. This gluten-free and vegetarian snack showcases the versatility of puffed rice, known as “mandakki” in Kannada, the local language. Churumuri comes in various regional variations across Karnataka and is a beloved street food in the region. While puffed rice snacks are popular throughout India, Churumuri stands out for its unique preparation and flavor.

Unlike its counterparts like Bhel Puri in western India or Jhal Muri in the eastern parts, Churumuri is exceptionally quick and easy to make, requiring minimal preparation. This snack doesn’t involve the elaborate preparation of spicy and sweet chutneys, nor does it require boiled potatoes. What sets Karnataka-style Churumuri apart is the use of coconut oil, which not only enhances the overall taste but also imparts a delightful aroma.

Cooking Time: 10 minutes

Serving Size: 2

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups puffed rice
  • ¼ cup peanuts
  • 1 small to medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 small carrot, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons green mango, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • ¼ to ⅓ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 3 pinches black salt
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 3 pinches turmeric powder
  • ¼ cup sev (crispy chickpea noodles)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Peel, rinse, and finely chop the onion, tomato, carrot, green mango, green chili, and coriander leaves.
  2. Roast the Puffed Rice: Heat ½ tablespoon of coconut oil in a pan or skillet. Add the puffed rice and roast it until it becomes crisp and crunchy. This usually takes about 2-4 minutes.
  3. Combine Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the roasted puffed rice, peanuts, red chili powder, turmeric powder, salt, and black salt. Mix well.
  4. Add Vegetables: Now, add the finely chopped vegetables, green chilies, and coriander leaves to the bowl.
  5. Lemon Zest: Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the mixture and give it a quick toss to evenly coat the ingredients.
  6. Final Touch: Drizzle the remaining coconut oil over the Churumuri and give it a final toss for that delightful flavor infusion.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Garnish your Churumuri with sev, adding both texture and flavor. Serve your delicious Churumuri immediately, savoring the wonderful blend of flavors and the satisfying crunch.

TIPS:

  • Puffed Rice Quality: Use fresh and crispy puffed rice for the best texture and taste. Stale puffed rice can result in a less enjoyable snack.
  • Chopping Technique: Finely chop the vegetables for a uniform and balanced distribution of flavors in every bite.
  • Customization: Feel free to customize your Churumuri with your preferred ingredients. You can add or omit vegetables, adjust the spiciness, or experiment with different seasonings.
  • Serve Immediately: Churumuri is at its best when served immediately after preparation to maintain its crunchy texture.
  • Lemon Juice: The addition of lemon juice provides a tangy twist to the snack. Adjust the amount to suit your taste preferences.

This Karnataka-style Churumuri is a quick and tasty snack that captures the essence of Indian street food. Enjoy its unique flavors and textures as a delightful treat anytime you crave a delicious and satisfying snack.
