INGREDIENTS:

  • ½ cup creme fraiche
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt, full-fat or 2%
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 2 pickled jalapeños, seeded and chopped, or 1 heaping tablespoon pickled jalapeño slices, chopped
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro, optional

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. In a small bowl, stir together all of the ingredients until well combined.
  2. Serve the sauce right away for immediate use or refrigerate it for up to an hour to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Spoon the creamy lime-jalapeño sauce onto fish or shrimp tacos before serving, or you can also pass the sauce at the table for everyone to add as desired.

VARIATIONS:

  • Avocado Twist: Mash in a ripe avocado for an extra creamy and rich version of the crema. The avocado’s buttery texture complements the heat of the jalapeños and adds a lovely green hue.
  • Honeyed Heat: For a sweet and spicy twist, add a drizzle of honey to balance out the heat of the jalapeños. The sweet and spicy combination creates a unique flavor profile.
  • Smoky Chipotle: Replace the pickled jalapeños with chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce for a smoky and earthy flavor. The smokiness pairs well with grilled meats and adds a distinctive touch.
  • Herb-Infused: Instead of or in addition to cilantro, experiment with other fresh herbs like chopped fresh parsley, chives, or even mint. Each herb will lend its unique aroma and taste to the crema.
  • Citrus Burst: Enhance the citrusy notes by adding zest from the lime along with the juice. The lime zest provides an extra layer of fragrance and brightness.
  • Creamy Garlic: Incorporate a roasted garlic puree or minced roasted garlic for a creamy and aromatic variation. Roasted garlic adds depth and complexity to the crema’s flavor.
  • Tropical Fusion: Mix in a small amount of chopped pineapple or mango for a tropical twist. The sweetness of the fruit complements the heat of the jalapeños.
  • Spiced Yogurt: Replace the Greek yogurt with flavored yogurt, such as plain yogurt with added spices like cumin or paprika. This adds an extra layer of complexity to the crema.
  • Nutty Nuance: Stir in a tablespoon of finely chopped nuts like toasted almonds or pistachios. Nuts contribute a satisfying crunch and nutty flavor.
  • Coconut Creaminess: Replace the creme fraiche with coconut cream or coconut yogurt for a dairy-free alternative. This version pairs well with seafood and adds a touch of tropical flair.
